Saint Nicholas Inn is located in the historic Sugar Hill section of Harlem. The
Neighborhood is defined by 155th Street to the north and 154th Street to the south; Edgecombe Avenue to the east and Amsterdam Avenue to the west. The name Sugar Hill orginated int eh 1920's and identified the "sweet life" in Harlem. The area became a popular place to live for wealthy African Americans such as W.E.B. DuBois, Thurgood Marshall, Adam Clayton Powell, and Duke Ellington. Langston Houghes wrote about Sugher Hill's affluence in his essay "Down and Under in Harlem"
Sugar Hill has been a New York City Landmark since 2000.
